Following the Trail to Alexandria
For most of my life, I accepted the standard narrative surrounding the Fourth Way.
Like many students of Gurdjieff, I was fascinated by stories of hidden monasteries, secret brotherhoods, forgotten wisdom traditions, and mysterious journeys into Central Asia. The origins of the teaching seemed to disappear into a fog somewhere beyond the borders of conventional history. There were hints of Sufism, traces of Buddhism, references to ancient Egypt, Persia, Babylon, and countless other influences. The deeper I looked, the broader the landscape became.
Yet over time, something began to bother me.
The problem was not that there were too few clues. The problem was that there were too many.
Gurdjieff was notorious for leaving breadcrumbs. He rarely answered questions directly when a more interesting answer could be given indirectly.
